Khaki Campbell Ducks

Dr Arthur Campbell was the village doctor in Uley at the start of the 20th century. In 1910 he purchased a motor car, an open car with a hood, which was driven by his chauffeur, Mr W Bruton. He was probably the first person in the village to own a motor car . (See Fig.28 in The History of Uley) Prior to this he attended to his patients by horse & trap.

He was very active in he village and became a Parish Councillor in 1894. He built the Reading Room for men & women out of work.

He and his wife, Adele, were pioneers in the world of standard bred poultry.

The campbell ducks were developed by Mrs Campbell about 10 years ago, she was an expert on poultry & kept many breeds, including Brahmas, Silkies, Sultans & Wyandottes. She experimented with many breeds and in 1901 she developed he Khaki Campbell from the crossing of a Rouen drake with a Fawn & White Runner, then crossed the progency with a Mallard.

The Khaki is said to be second to none in laying.

On retirement Dr & Mrs Campbel moved to Hampshire.
