Treasures of Uley

In the 1960's a Treasures of Uley exhibition was held at Stouts Hill and Thoss Shearer has revisited a copy of the catalogue held in his collection. The catalogue lists a number of paintings and artifacts exhibited and although Thoss has managed to locate some of them there are still several we cannot trace. There is nothing in the Uley Archives relating to this particular exhibition but we list below some of the items we are searching for. Maybe you or your family have knowledge of these potentially interesting historic paintings/drawings. If you can help or have any information please get in touch with us.

1. Oil painting of Edward Sheppard by John Linnell, 1825. Sold at Sotheby's in 1993 but they do not know where it is now. Linnell also drew members of the family, one of these has been located of Edward Sheppard's daughter, Fanny, but this is currently with a dealer at an unrealistic price!

2. Painting of Newbrook Farm with Downham Hill in the background, artist unknown, 1880. The late Sheila Parsons of Newbrook Farm shared a colour photograph of this in 2014 - she tried to purchase the original but whoever then owned it would not agree to sell.

3. Watercolour of Angeston Grange by George Cumberland, c.1822. This was reproduced in black & white in Nicholas Kingsley's The Country Houses of Gloucestershire, Vol 2 (1992) p.52. At the time it belonged to Major Goldingham, and it was also in colour in Country Life in 2001. We do not know where the original one is now, but we are checking with the Goldinghams.

4. On the Camp at Uley by Charles March Gere (Painswick based artist associated with the Arts & Crafts Movement). It was sold in 1967 following the death of Katherine Sturt of Uley Lodge.

5. Painting of Uley Turnpike, artist unknown but c.1910 (formerly owned by Mrs M Caple).

6. Watercolour of St. Giles Feast, 1894 (formerly owned by Miss W Smith)

7. Sketch of old Uley Church before rebuilding, 1857 (formerly owned by Mrs R Barnett ) Not the picture which was exhibited at the same time & hangs in the Church today.

8. Watercolour of Uley Schoolroom by “Georgina Lady Broomfield” 1830 (formerly owned by Miss N Lloyd Baker)

9. Watercolour of Cross Banks by “Georgina Lady Broomfield” 1830. ditto.

10. Watercolour of Stouts Hill, before 1880 (formerly owned by Mr & Mrs R Angus)

11. Marquetry picture of The Green and Uley Church (formerly owned by Mr & Mrs D Till)

We have established that Mr & Mrs D Till lived at The Old Manse, but we have absolutely no knowledge of “Georgina Lady Broomfield”. Do you know of her?

Any knowledge you may have would help enormously and, of course, would enhance our archives considerably.
